Description: The prehistoric paintings found on the walls of selected structures at Teleilat Ghassul in Jordan are stunning, mysterious and historically significant. While the subject matter of the individual scenes is undoubtedly intriguing it will not be the focus of the current paper. This discussion will concentrate on some of the bigger questions, such as, when these painting were created, why they were produced, where they were situated, who created them and who their audience was. This interrogative approach provides further insights into their significance within the socially enigmatic, symbolically rich culture that flourished beside the Dead Sea in the later years of the fifth millennium BCE.
